The challenge was to bring together many key threads of a complex and darkly beautiful game in a single image. We spent a lot of time exploring ways to introduce the close relationship and physical separation of the protagonist Ariane and her partner Tomas, needing to also convey the enormity of their task — to find a new home for humankind. Bringing in elements of the hostile planet's unforgiving landscape, we landed on a composition split down the middle by a chasm of icy rock, lit by the ferocious red malevolence of a creature that hunts them.
The finished piece mirrors the cinematic quality and emotional pull of the game.
